Residential house, Štúrova Street 12

A townhouse from 1903 in an unconventional Art Nouveau style with motifs from folklore patterns, in a challenging Arts and Crafts design. National cultural monument.

The two-storey house with a bay window on the corner of Štúrova and Taller Streets was built by the Gestetner family according to a project by architects from Budapest. Marcell Komor and Dezsö Jakab created an extravagant Art Nouveau style, using archaic folkloric inspirations from all over the territory of the former Austro-Hungarian monarchy. It was applied in the articulation of the facades, in the textures and patterns of the plasterwork, in the motifs of the stucco ornaments, and in the metal lattice details.  The façade of the house is unique in our environment, and artistic parallels by the authors can only be found on challenging architectures in the territory of present-day Hungary, Slovenia and Romania.

Implementation

The devastated facade from numerous rough repairs has been cleaned of paint and plaster deposits, down to the exposure of the original structures and rasters. The character of the plasterwork has been restored to its original expression. The cornices, corrugated stucco, profiled window framing, decorative ornamental friezes were reconstructed in their original profiles. The special metal elements, with symbolic ornamentation, have been sensitively restored. The ventilated plinth of the street facades was created and the courtyard facades were reconstructed. The restoration of the authentic colour scheme according to the original was carried out with KEIM materials, hand-painted due to the artistic complexity.
