Residential house Legionárska street

Bratislava, Legionárska 3 – 7. Restoration of the street and courtyard facade. National cultural monument.

Implementation

Four-storey apartment house Legionárska 3, 5, 7 is in a terraced housing. It was built in 1923 according to the project of a pair of architects J. Grossmann and A. Balán. The house is in the style of functionalism with the receding decorativism of the national type, which is applied in the rich details of the main façade as well as on the courtyard façades. The prominent brackets of the ground floor support a wide mezzanine cornice. The windows have segmental and semi-circular extensions. The wrap-around cornices and the bay window design of the courtyard facades, including the stylish metal railings, are distinctively decorative.

The restoration of the façades , which were badly damaged by leakage, pollution, graffiti and with degraded plaster, required attention not only in terms of technical restoration, but also in the reconstruction of the unusual stylistic details. All the stone parts, plaster and stucco elements were restored. The wooden architectural elements ( gates) were cleaned and restored, as well as the metal elements ( grilles, railings, basement ventilators) and the rainwater drainage system. Particular attention was paid to the uncovering of the original colour scheme and its reconstruction in terracotta, light sand-grey and ochre, using BAUMIT materials.
