Comenius University, Šafárikovo Square 6, Bratislava. 5 double-leaf entrance doors of the main entrance. Arts and crafts restoration National cultural monument.
The project of the building of today’s Comenius University was created in 1927. The designer was František Krupka, the realizer was the company Hlavaj -Palkovič Uličný. Slovak and Czech companies participated in the construction and locksmith works. The architectural style of functionalism has contemporary progressive elements of art-deco. The set of five double-leaf doors of the main entrance to the building is set in a semicircular façade and leads to the entrance hall. The door-metal gates have a monumental concept. The basic structure is iron. The cladding of the structure is made of red brass sheet. The sheets are flat glued and reinforced with screws, without welds. The decorative elements are of yellow polished brass, as are the handles and washers. The door glazing is original.
The door has been unmaintained for a long time, the pivot opening system was badly damaged, non-functional. All structures were heavily soiled. The intention was to restore the original functionality and appearance .The work required a highly professional metal restoration approach , and technical expertise. The door was dismantled, taken away. They underwent a total professional cleaning. They were dismantled, elements and mouldings removed, repaired or copies made. All parts were preserved, even in the cavities. Straightened warped parts were reapplied. After reassembly, the door was conserved overall. The necessary base for fitting was created and a system of hinges and pins was created for functional use again, the function of the locks and closing was restored. Once the restoration was complete, the five metal double-leaf doors were reinstalled in their original location.
